FC Basel defender Philipp Degen has heaped praise on Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
The former Switzerland international played alongside Gerrard at Anfield between 2008 and 2011 so is well-versed to comment on the veteran midfielder who has been criticised in recent times.
Ahead of the crucial Champions League meeting between the two clubs on Tuesday night, Degen spoke highly of his old skipper Gerrard while commenting on how special a night it will be on Merseyside as both teams look to progress to the Round of 16.
"He was - is - the boss both on and off the pitch, and a great personality at this club," said Degen.
"When I was here he was the man I went to when I had questions.
"It is always special to play here and it is a Champions League night where it is a matter of all or nothing."
