Brighton youngster Ben Barclay admits that even though he was happy to make his debut for the side, it was spoiled by defeat.
Barclay was one of many under-23 players who got a chance for Brighton in the Carabao Cup Second Round against Southampton.
But Charlie Austin got a late goal for the visitors, giving them passage into the next round.
Barclay, 21, told The Argus: "It does (ruin it). If it's your debut, whether you have a good game or not, if you concede at the death it's going to be frustrating.
"He (Hughton) congratulated us young lads. He thought we did well, it was a good test for us. For me and Will it was our senior debuts in any league, we've not been out on loan.
"The changes that they made, they brought on fresh legs, good players, so it was difficult for us."
