Barcelona fullback Daniel Alves has been hit by a two-match suspension.

Alves will miss this Sunday's Catalan derby against Espanyol, as well as the Valencia game the following week, after he was handed a two-game suspension for his sending off against Atletico Madrid, says Marca.

The Brazilian saw a straight red for a nasty, late challenge on Yannick Carrasco in the Blaugrana's win over Atleti, after the referee checked VAR footage. Alves' use of his studs and the lack of intention to play the ball were aggravating factors which counted against him.

This means that Alves won't play again until at least February 27 against Villarreal, given that he has not been registered to play in the Europa League so cannot face Napoli next week or the week after, meaning that Barcelona will have to make do without him for the next four games.

There was also punishment for Xavi's brother and second in command, Oscar Hernandez, with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)'s Competition Committee also handing him a two-game suspension for his repeated protests against the refereeing decisions of Jesus Gil Manzano.
