Barcelona members overwhelmingly approve Espai Barca project

Barcelona's Espai Barca project will go ahead after a vote at the club's General Assembly.

Marca reports the meeting of club members was decisive for Joan Laporta's presidency at Barcelona, and few votes mattered more than the approval of funding for the Espai Barca project which will revamp Camp Nou.

Having been suspended midway through the initial meeting, 455 Barcelona members met again on Saturday as the board requested approval of a loan of 1.5 billion euros.

Members approved it with a huge majority, as there were 405 votes in favour and only 21 against.

"This is a historic opportunity, we have to take advantage and we'll do it well," Laporta told members before the vote.

He had previously spoken of the club's obsolete facilities and how rivals had already renovated their stadiums to gain an advantage.

Laporta also explained that work had been done to redo part of the project, such as plans to move 12,000 club members from the first tier to the third inside the stadium.

He put the cost of the project to date at 145 million euros, with five percent of the project completed.

"I don't want to be apocalyptic, I'm just putting you up to date," he said.

"Risk? The risk is very calculated and members will be punctually informed of all movements."
