Barcelona coach Xavi insists there's no grudge against Lionel Messi over his decision to join Inter Miami.

Messi announced yesterday that he would be joining Inter Miami instead of returning to Barca as he comes off contract at PSG.

Xavi said: "I notice a change in the last days, weeks, that perhaps I do not see it so clearly. You have to respect him. Many times we do not put ourselves in the situation of the other. We lack empathy, being a Leo is difficult.

"Imagine the focus of Messi. He is never quiet. He has to be a 10 always. He has to be the best attacking, defending, taking penalties... He hasn't had a good time these two years and he doesn't want these pressures. The illusion is generated because we both speak. We have talked a lot, all parties were excited. First him, then me and the club.

"The circumstances have not been given. He has explained it naturally. He wanted to lower the level of pressure and tension a bit. He wants a quieter and more family life.

"It is a personal decision, the circumstances have not helped, but the decision is Leo's and you have to respect him. I was convinced that we would go well with Leo here. In all the press conferences I said that it depended on him.

"The last thing I want is to cheat the culé. I'm not going to reveal private conversations but the decision depended a lot on Leo. Naturally he has decided that. I wish him all the best for him and his family."
