Barcelona coach Valverde doesn't expect Messi to be fit for season kickoff

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde doesn't expect Leo Messi to be fit for the start of the season.

Messi missed the club's tour of the United States with a calf injury but is now back in training back in Barcelona.

"He's in the recovery process and I don't know if he will be ready for the start of La Liga," Valverde said after his side's 4-0 win over Napoli in Ann Arbor. "It's looking difficult."

However, Valverde won't be too downhearted after seeing a trident formed by Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann run riot against Napoli on Saturday.

Suarez scored twice and Dembele and Griezmann were also on target as Barça won the La Liga-Serie A cup 5-1 on aggregate.
