Atletico Madrid survive in Champions League after penalty shootout

Atletico Madrid reached the Champions League quarterfinals after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Mario Suarez netted after 27 minutes at the Vicente Calderon to hand the hosts the lead on the night but with no other score to follow in normal time, the match went to extra-time and penalties thanks to the German side's 1-0 first-leg lead.

And after Fernando Torres had put Atletico 3-2 ahead, Stefan Kiessling missed Bayer's decisive spot-kick to send their opponents through to the last eight.

Suarez remarked afterwards: "The Champions League is the better competition there is and we know that from now onwards it going to be tough.

"We played well in this return leg, the fans helped us and Oblak was superb in the shoot-out."
