Atletico Madrid fullback Santiago Arias insists there was no plan to handle the ball late on in victory over Real Valladolid.

Arias was at the centre of controversy during Atletico's 1-0 win as he seemed to handle the ball in the area with just minutes remaining, causing VAR to suggest to the referee to take a second look.

After reviewing the incident, the referee decided against giving a penalty even though contact was clear.

"The important thing was the win," he said.

"In controversies, the referee is the one who decides in the end.

"The handball was unintentional and that's all from my side."
