Lucas has seen off the City defender to become Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps' first-choice left-back.
He said, "As I have already said in other interviews, in my head I told myself that I was the competitor of Benjamin Mendy. But I knew he was not going to let go.
"So at training, at the matches before the World Cup, I gave everything. Then, the coach made his choice to put me starter and I had the joy of winning the World Cup.
"When the coach put me in the first game of the World Cup (against Australia) and he put Benjamin Mendy on the bench, that's when I really realised that the coach had decided to put me starter.
"In order not to disappoint him, I knew it would be my match, that I had to give everything. That's what I did. From there, every game I tried to give everything."
