Atletico Madrid coach Simeone surprised Man City held back Foden

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone was impressed by Phil Foden after their 1-0 first-leg Champions League quarterfinal defeat at Manchester City.

Simeone was surprised to see Foden only on the bench for the beginning of the match, yet the English midfielder would be introduced in the second-half, and his impact was virtually immediate, providing the assist for De Bruyne's goal.

"We expected him to start because he is a very dynamic player," Simeone detailed. "He came on in the second half, and he is very powerful in attacking moves.

"It's good to watch Manchester City play, the patience that they have to play, they were waiting for their moment whilst we were waiting for our moment too, with different weapons we are both looking for the same thing."

Atleti remain in the tie ahead of the return match in the Spanish capital, which is key for the Argentine coach, who is refusing to give up on progression into the semi-final.

"You always have to have a slightly better approach," Simeone intimated.

"It's a long tie, split into two matches here and at home. It doesn't matter to them, they play the same way, how far can we go? As far as we can."
