Atletico Madrid coach Simeone: Players convinced me to pen new terms

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone says he penned new terms this week on request of the players.

Simeone has signed terms to 2022.

"I haven't heard or read anything," he said at his press conference ahead of Atletico's game against Rayo Vallecano.

"I have an idea in my head, I'm convinced of the future and I trust the club.

"Above all, I believe in the players; they are the ones who pushed me to make this decision. [We want] to keep growing and they bring out my best trait, which is to compete."

It was put to the Argentine that he has become to Atletico what Johan Cruyff is for Barcelona.

"I don't stop to analyse what I've done," Simeone added.

"Football and life depend on today and what you're going to give. We have a very big challenge.

"The young people that I can grow and the way they continue along this path to become footballers, they are the most important thing and we will be able to continue developing them because they are young and they compete.

"That is what I have set out to do since I came to Atletico."
