Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino: We deserved victory against Villarreal

Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino insists they deserved more after drawing 1-1 with Villarreal.

The Lions took the lead in the 44th minute via Raúl García, but Villarreal equalised against the run of play on the hour mark. Athletic had the better chances to score and had reason to feel aggrieved when the referee did not award a penatly after Serge Aurier handballed in the box.

“We were very good in terms of organisation and quick in precise attacking combinations," Marcelino said at his post-match press conference.

“We created a lot of chances. It's a pity we couldn't win after playing such a good game and creating so many chances against a good opponent away from home. Nevertheless, our overall performance gives me reason to be happy."

He continued: “The team played at a very good level. We're fully satisfied with the match, but we are unhappy with the result because we deserved to win. We've now played several good matches in a row.

“Now, we have to focus on recovering and trying to beat Celta. If we continue like this, we won't be far away from winning."
