Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino was delighted after victory over Atletico Madrid.

He was full of praise for the Lions after their 2-0 win over Atlético Madrid in Bilbao on Saturday night.

An own goal by Mario Hermoso plus an Iñaki Williams penalty saw Athletic pick up three points crucial points with a dominating show of class at San Mamés.

“I'm very happy with my players," Marcelino said in his post-match press conference. “They put in an extraordinary performance.

“We played with a lot of skill, speed, precision and we had a certain amount of luck, which is often needed. We deserved to win. These players played a great game. I am very proud of them."

Los Rojiblancos remain in eighth place but they are now just one point behind Villarreal CF in seventh place and a spot in next season's Europa Conference League.

Marcelino said: “This victory keeps us in the fight for Europe. Let's see if we can win the next game together with our fans. The important thing is the next match and getting a lot of points. Then we'll see what that total will give us."

The gaffer also spoke of the crowd at The Cathedral, saying: “That was a great atmosphere. The whole place was rocking. Another magic night here. I now have four nights here I'll never forget."
