Aston Villa showing against Southampton pleases Lambert

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert was of the belief that his team produced a decent performance against Southampton on Monday night.

Villa took the lead in the 29th minute at home when Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster gifted Gabby Agbonlahor the opener following a long clearance from Ciaran Clark.

The home team could have gone two goals ahead but Andreas Weimann missed a sitter before Nathaniel Clyne smashed home an 81st-minute leveler to deny Lambert's men maximum points.

But the result was welcomed by the Villa manager whose side moved up to 16th on the Premier League table with a 12th point from their 12th outing.

"I thought it was a really good game against a very good side," said Lambert after overseeing his 100th match for the West Midlands club.

"It's a point gained against a team who had swept everything in front of them aside. If you look at the money spent by these sides, it's a big difference from us.

"We had a great chance to go 2-0 up but I couldn't fault the team. We've got six first-team players out, at the minute, so I can't criticise the team.

"There aren't many quicker than Gabby Agbonlahor and that ball over the top was something we tried this week in training.

"We thought his pace could cause Southampton problems, which it did."
