Aston Villa's Given performs Republic of Ireland U-turn

Shay Given has declared his availability for the Republic of Ireland national team despite announcing his retirement last year.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper has revealed that he has spoken with manager Giovanni Trapattoni and says he is looking to represent his country again.

"I have spoken to Giovanni and he knows I am available," he wrote in his column for the Irish Sun.

"He is going to stick with the new players against Poland (in February) and I understand that.

"Keiren Westwood, David Forde and Darren Randolph are the goalkeepers in the frame for that game. I wish them well. I am not looking to stand on their toes.

"But, as I told Giovanni, I am here if one of them gets injured."
