Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez: Why I mocked Mina; I wanted to win for Messi

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has explained his banter with Everton defender Yerry Mina during the Copa America.

Martinez finished Copa winners with Argentina, having won a crucial semifinal shootout against Mina's Colombia, where the defender had a decisive penalty saved.

The Villa keeper told ESPN: "I had seen that Yerry Mina danced to (Fernando) Muslera during penalties against Uruguay and I did not want him to do it with me. That is why I was encouraged to talk to him. But everything stayed there.

"I wrote to him to explain everything and apologise, but to this day he has not responded.

"I have many Colombian friends, David Ospina is one of them and he came to my wedding. He wrote to me later saying that everything is fine and that this is football. I would like to go to know Colombia sometime."

Martinez added: "I wanted to win it more for (Lionel) Messi than for me. It was the dream of all Argentines. I said that several months before the Copa. Who did not want Messi to win the Copa?"
