Aston Villa fall short with bid for Man City keeper Given

Aston Villa have had an opening bid for Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given turned down.

The Sun says Villa have been told to double their opening bid if they want to land Manchester City keeper Given this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international is rated at £5million by the FA Cup winners - even though he is 35 and has suffered two serious shoulder injuries recently.

Villa boss Alex McLeish weighed in with a £2.5m offer this week but the Eastlands club were not tempted to sell at that price.

And Celtic are still in the race, although their big problem could be getting somewhere close to his current £90,000-a-week wages.
