Aston Villa boss Gerrard admits 'real concern' after Carlos injury in victory over Everton

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard admits he's worried about Diego Carlos' injury suffered in victory over Everton.

Gerrard has spoke of his “real concern" following a stoppage-time injury to new signing Carlos. The Brazilian, impressive on his home debut, hobbled off late on in Villa's 2-1 win over Everton.

Gerrard said: “We'll have to wait and see what the outcome is of Diego Carlos's injury and why he's gone off the pitch because I'm extremely worried about that situation. We're going to send him for an MRI scan but it doesn't look good right now so that might tarnish how I feel from a personal point of view because I'm extremely happy with the win and the performance but, if we happen to lose someone who's so important to us, that could tarnish the win."

Asked if it'll be a huge blow to Villa, Gerrard added: “Let's not say it is just yet but I'm worried about it. It's around the ankle, Achilles area. He's felt an awkward mechanism in there. You can see by the player and the man that he's not the type to go off easy. He looks concerned with it and the medical staff seem concerned and that's the reason why I'm worried about it."

Elsewhere, Philippe Coutinho and Matty Cash were also taken off against Everton but Gerrard suggested the pair should be OK to return against Crystal Palace next weekend.

“Phil should be OK, and Cashy," Gerrard said. “That's down to perhaps a bit of tiredness, cramp or tight muscle damage but, hopefully, we'll have enough time to get them right for next week. It's Diego I'm concerned with right now."
