Prosecutors have dropped an assault charge against Manchester United's head of first-team development Nicky Butt.
The former United midfielder was accused of beating his estranged wife Shelley Barlow last April, with the case due to go to trial next week.
It is believed Ms Barlow did not want to take to the witness stand against her husband.
A Crown Prosecution Services spokesman said: "We have a duty to keep all cases under review and following the receipt of new material have decided to discontinue this prosecution.
"Mr Butt has agreed to accept a caution for criminal damage."
