ASIAN CUP: QF attendances sees Australia 2015 surpass Qatar 2011

The 2015 AFC Asian Cup surpassed a landmark attendance record following Thursday's quarter-finals.

Australia's 2-0 win over China in Brisbane and South Korea's 2-0 extra-time triumph over Uzbekistan in Melbourne took the total attendance figures to 465,381 for the 16th edition of the Asian Football Confederation's showcase tournament.

The number has already bypassed the total attendance numbers for Qatar 2011 which finished on 421,000 after Japan defeated Australia 1-0 in the final in Doha.

46,067 supporters watched Tim Cahill net a double to down China at Suncorp Stadium while 23,381 cast their eyes over the AAMI Park pitch as Son Heung-min scored twice in added time to give the Taeguk Warriors victory over the Uzbeks, which suggests to AFC general secretary Dato' Alex Soosay that the tournament thus far has been a success.

"The fans are making this a truly remarkable festival of football. The overwhelming support is heartening, and we are on course to surpass our initial attendance estimation which is a wonderful achievement," said Soosay.

"We are focused on giving fans a great football experience, and the increasing support is further proof that we have been doing just that."

Friday's quarter-finals see Iran take on Iraq in Canberra with the winner to take on South Korea in the semi-finals while Japan the UAE in Sydney for the chance to meet hosts Australia in the other final four fixture.
