Arthur Melo started for Liverpool U21s in Papa Johns Trophy loss to Rochdale

Arthur Melo started for Liverpool Under-21s in their Papa Johns Trophy defeat by League Two strugglers Rochdale.

The Juventus loanee made his first start for the club in the U21s win over Leicester last weekend, as he looks to regain fitness during the international break.

But Arthur's second appearance was a tougher assignment as he was substituted after 60 minutes for player-coach Jay Spearing.

Rochdale eventually found the winner though as Tahvon Campbell was released into the box and the forward lifted the ball over the onrushing Luke Hewitson with just eight minutes remaining.

Reds defender Oludare Olufunwa was sent off for a second yellow card, but Ian Henderson saw the subsequent penalty saved.

Liverpool have been beaten in both of their games in this year's competition and are out.
