Arteta disappointed as Arsenal downed by Hibernian in first preseason friendly

Arsenal were defeated 2-1 by Hibernian in their preseason friendly of the summer.

The Gunners dominated for the majority of the game but were made to pay for some horrible mistakes at the back.

Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson both missed great chances in the first-half, but it was Hibs who went ahead midway through the first half.

Teenage goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo completely missed Cedric Soares' back pass, allowing Martin Boyle to score into an empty net.

Daniel Mackay then doubled Hibernian's lead from a corner on 69 minutes.

Emile Smith Rowe, a second-half substitute, pulled one back for the visitors but it was just a consolation for Mikel Arteta's side.

"Well I'm always disappointed when we lose a football match but it is the first game, we played with many kids and we only had four training sessions," Arteta said after the game.

"We've trained really hard and you could see that the players were a little bit leggy. I think we conceded the first goal, an accident, and the second goal was clearly offside.

"We created many, many chances but we didn't score. That's what pre-season is for, to take the things that we haven't done well into a training session and then improve."
