Arsenal missed Welbeck but showed character to hold Man City - Wilshere

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere believes he and his teammates produced strong character to draw 2-2 with Manchester City on Sunday.

The Gunners lost striker Danny Welbeck to a knee injury inside 25 minutes when the scoreline at the Etihad Stadium was 1-1 but managed to come away with a 2-2 draw in their second last fixture of the Premier League season.

Wilshere, who replaced Welbeck, felt the Gunners responded well after Kevin De Bruyne fired City back into the lead on 51 minutes and was thrilled with the result in what could have been a disastrous result for their Champions League hopes had the North Londoners been beaten.

"We lost a player early and it is tough to respond. City had a disappointing result midweek, but after going 2-1 down we showed good character to come back," Wilshere told arsenal.com after Olivier Giroud cancelled out Sergio Aguero's early opener before Alexis Sanchez levelled on 68 minutes.

"He is an attacking player so you lose that little bit extra in the final third, so of course we missed him.

"It was nice for me as I got to get on the pitch, but when you lose a player of Danny's style, you are going to miss something."

Third-placed Arsenal are now three points clear of City with just one fixture left in the 2015/16 season meaning a Champions League finish looks a likely scenario.
