Arsenal, Man Utd alerted as Barcelona consider Vermaelen loan exit

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is being linked with a return to England. The former Arsenal captain swapped the Premier League for La Liga in a £15million deal during the summer despite being linked with a move to Old Trafford, but injuries have prevented him from making his debut under Luis Enrique.

El Mundo Deportivo says Barcelona are still keen on keeping the Belgium international, and claim that the Catalans are willing to send Vermaelen out on loan for the remainder of the season in order to build up his core strength and fitness.

The 29-year-old's availability has alerted Manchester United and Arsenal, who are both struggling with injuries in defence, and Vermaelen could find himself back in familiar territory this winter on a short-term deal.
