Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva believes Thomas Partey is the club's best defensive midfielder since his departure in 2008.

The Brazilian and midfield partner Patrick Vieira were key components to Arsene Wenger's 'Invicibles'.

Partey, signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer, has overcome injuries this season to become a regular in Mikel Arteta's side.

And Silva has been impressed by the Ghana international.

Asked if Arsenal had finally found a replacement for himself, Silva told Stadium Astro: "I guess so. In my opinion, I agree with you.

"He's a good player. He's the type of player Arsenal were missing, I've spoken a couple of times about it.

"They have good players in the [central midfield] position but not to sit and give Arsenal the stability they have."
