Arsenal defender Campbell stands by decision to sue Portsmouth

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell stands by his decision to take legal action against Portsmouth for £1.7 million.

Campbell said that he is acting out of a point of principle.

"I can't say much about Portsmouth as the process has begun," Campbell told The Times. "There's a lot of other people who've taken far more out of the club than me. As far as I see it, if you have a contract, you have a contract. That's it, and it's only fair.

"If you get something written down, that's what you're owed. How's that going against football? I signed that contract in good faith.

"Some of the other players have got contracts and they've not been paid either. It's clear, it's stated, it's in people's faces. I'm not exactly going to be the one that brings them down."

Campbell expressed sympathy with the Portsmouth fans, but was scathing about the club's management and expressed incredulity that they have been unable to meet their obligations.

"They had Sky TV money, gate receipts, sponsors and sold lots of players, so where's the money gone?" he said. "It doesn't add up, but that's the situation. I don't think they'll go bust. Finance-wise, people have to organise it properly. I don't know what happened.

"I feel for the supporters as they're a fantastic crowd and unbelievable people. They've got fantastic support, but if you have a contract that's it. There's a lot of people in my situation, whether it be companies, the Inland Revenue or other footballers. My situation is nowhere near as much as some of the others."

If Campbell's legal action is successful, he is planning to use much of the money to help towards the running costs of his charity, Kids Go Live, an organisation he set up to take children from East London to events such as England rugby internationals, Wimbledon tennis and the 2012 Olympics.
