Arsenal chiefs are baffled why they failed not to buy back Ismael Bennacer before he left Empoli for AC Milan.
Bennacer has emerged as a star for AC Milan in recent months, nailing down a starting spot under Stefano Pioli.
The 23-year-old joined Milan from Serie A rivals Empoli in August 2019 for a reported £14m.
But before that, he was trying to break into the Arsenal first team, having spent two years in north London.
Bennacer made just one appearance for the club though before he was shipped off to Empoli.
However, in light of his recent development, reports in Italy suggest that Gunners chiefs think they may have been too hasty in allowing him to leave for nothing.
Calciomercato.com says a select number of officials at Arsenal “don't understand how it was possible" to let him go and not sign him back, as was the agreement they held with Empoli.
