Arsenal boss Arteta admits Ryan facing fitness test for Aston Villa clash

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits Mat Ryan faces a fitness test ahead of their clash with Aston Villa.

Ryan joined Arsenal on loan last month from Brighton, but Arteta says the Australian faces a late fitness test to decide if he will fill the suspended Bernd Leno's void at Villa Park.

"He [Ryan] has not been available to train yet," said Arteta. "[Runar Alex Runarsson] is available so we have a choice between Mat and Alex for the weekend.

"If Matt is able to train and they are both fit then we have a decision to make. If Matt is not fit then obviously Alex will be in goal."

Alex Runarsson came off the bench to make his league debut after Leno was sent off at Molineux, but Arteta says the Icelandic international "must earn his opportunity".

“Alex knew his role before we signed him and obviously we know his role after we signed him," said Arteta.

"We had a plan on the goalkeeper's position and we couldn't execute the plan for different reasons. Alex's role was very clear around the squad and that hasn't changed.

"He needs to earn his opportunity or his place, whether that's first, second or third, depending on his performance. He needs to push for that."
