Anderlecht reserves coach Bellamy: Newcastle have big influence on local press

Anderlecht reserves coach Craig Bellamy admits he's not a favourite of Newcastle United fans.

Bellamy believes the influence Newcastle have on the local media has played a role.

He said, "I wouldn't say it bothers me. Did I give everything I had when I played there? I did.

"Did I play well there? Yeah, definitely. I have seen plenty of players who offered very little to the football club get a better welcome than I do.

"I understand the circumstances I left in as well. It wasn't pretty and a lot of it was self-inflicted.

"When you are young and what I know now is completely different to what I knew then.

"Should I have done an interview on Sky Sports after, even when I thought I was right and I knew what I was saying? There is a time and place for it and that wasn't it.

"I knew I was never going to play for Newcastle ever again. If I was going to go, I was going to go out on my sword.

"It was how it was played out. Football clubs are very clever, they run the local media.

"But if they want you out, they know what to do. They can turn everyone against you, all it takes is one or two leaks. He didn't want to play here, he disrespected the club here."
