Ambitious Newcastle Jets now targeting EPL clubs

A-League outfit Newcastle Jets have MLS giants LA Galaxy coming to their backyard and now are setting their sights on English Premier League clubs.

The ambitious Jets will take on David Beckham's Galaxy at EnergyAustralia stadium on November 27 and executive chairman Ken Edwards says there may be more exhibition matches down the track if all goes well.

"This won't be the last event of this type that we will look to get involved in," Edwards told the Newcastle Herald. "There are other famous soccer clubs that do end-of-season trips out of Europe and America, so it's not a one-off, is what I'm trying to say.

"We want to do events of international standard and obviously that means being involved with Premier League clubs and the like."

Edwards confirmed that any visits from European clubs would not be turned into a round robin competition like Sydney FC held earlier this year with help from Rangers, Blackburn Rovers and AEK Athens.

"Not the format that Sydney used this year, but we'll be engaging with individual clubs that we could look to develop a relationship with," he added.

"This is an international-standard event that would usually be held in Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane.

"For Newcastle to have this is something pretty special."
