Alvaro Fernandez pledges Man Utd commitment; reveals positional switch

Alvaro Fernandez says his future is with Manchester United.

The former Real Madrid trainee is currently on-loan with Preston North End.

He recalled to Relevo: "At Real Madrid, to reach Castilla there are 800,000 players ahead of you.

"I was a first-year youth player. At United, two months later I was already in the reserves.

"Eric García, (Gerard) Piqué or (Dani) Carvajal have had to leave to end up returning to Spain. It's always nice to go back to where you started, but for now I'm very good at Manchester United."

Fernandez, widely regarded as a wing-back, revealed a positional switch this season.

"United, Preston and I got together and we reached an agreement that I was going to play as a winger. In the Championship, having more than 40 games, one is injured and the same plays in another position, but I was happy.

"I know it's not my lifelong demarcation: I'll most likely end up being a winger. I already knew that Preston played 3-5-2, although sometimes we change to 4-3-3.

"To defend in England you have to work hard. In the Championship there are tough duels, people of 33 or 34 years old who go like jets. Defensively you have to work a lot. I have to improve defensively and in the air game. Almost every day we have a gym session."
