Former Juventus coach Max Allegri says the game was wrong to try to emulate the style of play employed by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Allegri insists Guardiola's famous tiki-taka football was only successful because of the players he first had at Barcelona.

"We falsely followed Pep for 20 years," he said.

"Guardiola's football was not for everyone. You have to have (Andre) Iniesta, Xavi and (Lionel) Messi for that. We took a topic that was only for them as a lesson for all."

Asked what he sees as the common style, Allegri added: "I see a return to the great counterattacking approach."
