Allardyce wants better than simply survival for West Ham

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has made it clear that he won't be making up the numbers in the Premier League next season.

The Hammers bounced straight back to England's top flight by winning the Championship promotion play-off over Blackpool a few weeks ago and Allardyce is targeting a quick start next term in order to finish as high as possible.

"My job is to aim as high as we can in the Premier League and not to say fourth from bottom is enough," Allardyce told Sky Sports.

"Let's see how far we can get this team at the first time of asking. The real challenge for me is to prepare the team for the best possible start for the first 10 games.

"That will take the pressure off as you're not in a relegation position every week, which is a constant gnaw at the player's confidence.

"That's the way forward if we can achieve it."
