Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has confirmed Edson Alvarez requested that the club sell him to Chelsea.
The Blues attempted a late deadline day £43m move to sign the Mexico international.
However, Ajax did not want to sell Alvarez that late in the window and rejected Chelsea's bid.
Speaking to ESPN, Schreuder said: "Chelsea reported themselves for Edson Alvarez on the final day and Alvarez wanted this.
"For one day he was feeling very down by yesterday he told me: 'Coach, I am here and I will give 100 per cent again."
