AC Milan director Zvonimir Boban insists new coach Stefano Pioli was always their first choice.
Pioli was hired 24 hours after the sacking of Marco Giampaolo.
Boban said at the new coach's presentation: “It's not nice to be here for a change of Coach, which is a defeat for all of us, also on a personal level.
“However, we must move forward with a choice that we think is right for Milan, like we did during the summer.
“I wish good luck to Stefano Pioli, a great Coach who arrives at a difficult time. If we're here, it means the responsibility is also ours.
“But we mustn't throw ourselves off the course, at least until we realise that we're no longer working for the good of the club.
“The important thing is never to lose dignity. We're sorry about this situation, but it's football.
“I'm not talking about Spalletti, a very good Coach. Our choice was Stefano Pioli.
“It's normal that many free Coaches were on our shortlist, but we focused on Pioli, a Coach who knows our club and Italian football.
“We're not the best team in the world, but we're also not the team we've shown to be so far.
“We're convinced that with Pioli, we can see a better game than what we've seen so far.
“We must aim to improve so Milan can be brought back where they need to be.
“We're working every day to understand how we can make Milan a great team again.
“Some more experienced players would be useful, but we know the market has precise dynamics."
