Former AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati insists Rino Gattuso needs time to prove himself as coach.

Abbiati recognises Milan's players are struggling for confidence.

“It is an important match, a derby that means a lot to both teams. It is important for the rest of the season. We are working hard, but so far not achieving the results, but still have confidence," Abbiati told Rai Sport.

“When I was playing, I'd just plug my ears and not listen to the criticism, as I had faith in myself. That's what the players must do now, because they all belong at Milan. They just have to believe in themselves more.

“It's easy to criticise when results don't come, but the players are working hard, I see it every day in training. It's still early to judge Gattuso and we hope to change gear this evening.

“I am sure that sooner or later Gattuso will be able to transmit his character and hunger to the players. He has been training this side for a month and it's too early to judge. I can guarantee he's doing a great job."
