A-LEAGUE WRAP - Week 2: Smeltz double gives Perth faultless start as Brisbane roll along

Week 2 of A-League action for the 2011/12 season was completed on the weekend with another host of interesting results.

In Adelaide on Friday night, home side Adelaide United got one over arch rivals Melbourne Victory with a 1-0 win in front of a record crowd at Hindmarsh Stadium thanks to Sergio van Dijk who pounced on a defensive error to slot home from outside the area in the 52nd minute.

In Gosford on Saturday, Central Coast Mariners snatched a 1-1 draw against Gold Coast United who took the lead in the 47th minute through another fabulous James Brown finish. Despite looking like taking a first win of the campaign back to Queensland, United conceded with three minutes remaining when Mariners centre-back Patrick Zwaanswijk looped in a header to grab a share of the spoils.

Reigning champions Brisbane Roar rolled along with another victory - this time a 2-0 result over Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The match marked the home debut of star signing Brett Emerton but the Roar forgot to read the script and maintained their unbeaten streak which has now reached 30 matches thanks to goals from new signing Besart Breisha and German ace Thomas Broich either side of half-time.

On Sunday, Wellington Phoenix overcame the loss of two players late in the game to hold onto a 2-0 against the Newcastle Jets lead which was created by goals from Tim Brown and Daniel whilst Shane Smeltz fired home a brace either side of David Williams' penalty to allow Perth Glory to make it two wins from two with a 2-1 victory over Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park.
