The Hyundai A-League has postponed its season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Football Federation Australia made the decision following Monday night's win for Newcastle Jets over Melbourne City.

The competition follows the stance taken by Australia's biggest two sporting competitions, the AFL and NRL.

FFA chief James Johnson announced on Tuesday: "These are unprecedented times. This is the unanimous decision of the FFA Board and the Hyundai A-League clubs to postpone the competition.

"The decision has been made in consultation with the national working committee for coronavirus.

"The FFA will review the postponement in a couple of weeks with a date set for April 22.

"The goal at this stage is to reschedule games as soon as it is reasonably possible to do so in order to complete the season. The clubs and players have indicated to FFA that they will be ready to continue should the competition be able to resume.

"We need to be responsible citizens, help the community and stop the spread of coronavirus.

"The decision involves the wellbeing of everyone. It has been at the forefront of our thinking.

"This was all in response to increased state and national requirements including the border restrictions and New Zealand.

"Mission complicated became mission impossible."
