Where’s the Sheikh? Man City lose Real Madrid’s Gago with terms agreed

Manchester City failed to clinch a deal for Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago last night.

Marca says City ran down the clock but couldn't get an agreement over the line before the Premiership's transfer deadline fell.

Indeed, the two clubs are said to have agreed an €18 million fee for Gago - but City needed the approval of club owner Sheikh Mansour and couldn't reach him before the 5pm deadline.

Gago is gutted as he was desperate to get out of Madrid, while City boss Roberto Mancini has been left without the ball-winning midfielder he wanted after seeing the Home Office reject a work permit application for McDonald Mariga, who eventually joined Inter Milan last night.
