Wenger happy with van Persie progress
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes his decision to nurture virtual unknowns and not spend big in the transfer market was vindicated in the Champions League win over Greek outfit Olympiakos on Tuesday night.
The French tactician singled out goalscorer Robin van Persie as one of the players who was purchased for a small fee and has since become a household name in Europe.
"He's now a big name," Wenger said of the Dutchman who he purchased for £2.75million five years ago.
"He is bigger than when he arrived. They make their names here. When you see who wasn't playing tonight, you see why we are not desperate.
“Everyone wants me to splash out because we have posted good financial results but you cannot buy anyone now. It is closed. Can you buy players at Waitrose? It's not a supermarket, you can only use the transfer market you have."
