Villa boss O’Neill confident Downing, Delph will prove worth

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is confident summer signings Stewart Downing and Fabian Delph will prove value for money.

Downing scored for Villa in last night's Carling Cup victory over Portsmouth.

Downing, 25, has been sidelined with ligament damage to a toe since his £12million move from Middlesbrough.

O'Neill admitted: "Football doesn't give you much time to wait these days and that was always going to be a concern.

"We spent money on a player who wouldn't be fit for a few months and a young kid, Fabian Delph, from Leeds. So I suppose there was always going to be concerns.

"But Fabian will be a great player and Stewart is already looking worth the wait."
