Villa boss O’Neill backing Dunne for Player of the Year

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill says Richard Dunne deserves to be considered for Player of the Year.

Dunne, signed for £5m from Manchester City, has been an instant replacement for Martin Laursen and has contributed hugely to the Premier League's meanest defence.

O'Neill said: "If the season was to end in two or three weeks, Dunne would certainly be up there as a contender for player of the year. He has been immense for us. Playing against Tottenham last Saturday if I needed any recent proof.

"There were two or three great blocks, he read two or three situations brilliantly, and he was playing against real quality players. He is quiet off the pitch. But when he does say something he is worth listening to. For £5m he has been incredible value."
