Uefa to release shock findings on gambling gangs
UEFA chiefs are ready to reveal the huge influence which gambling gangs have on football with the release of an anti-corruption dossier next month, reports The Guardian.
And Europe's governing body have even investigated Liverpool and Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final last season, although there is no suggestion of match fixing in that instance, after discovering that £30million worth of bets were placed on the match at one Chinese bookmakers.
Karl Dhont, of UEFA's anti-corruption office, said: "I told UEFA that bribery is a very serious threat in European football because of the cases we found. We have solid evidence. This is going to be the biggest case in history."
UEFA have proof of match-fixing in 40 games, including Champions League, UEFA Cup and Europa League matches, and have even flown to China to investigate bookmakers, where Dhont revealed, the £30m sum was wagered at one outlet alone.
Dhont said: "Under UEFA's authority we investigated that match. We went to China to interview one of the biggest bookmakers. The reason? "On the night of the Chelsea v Liverpool game, there were bets of £30m just on that particular match, at that bookmaker alone."
