Tottenham striker Keane set for Aston Villa talks
The News of the World says Villa and Tottenham are haggling over a transfer fee which could see the Ireland skipper overtake Nicolas Anelka, the Chelsea striker, and become the second most expensive footballer in history.
To do so, Villa would have to fork out £18million, well in excess of Keane's last transfer fee when he rejoined Spurs from Liverpool 18 months ago.
Yet it is unlikely they will do so because Martin O'Neill and Randy Lerner reckon Keane is comparable to a second-hand Jaguar - reliable, still classy, but not worth the original price because of high mileage.
Nonetheless, O'Neill reckons the 29-year-old is worth a punt.
