Tottenham’s Redknapp backs five-goal hero Defoe for Golden Boot
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes Jermain Defoe can top the goalscoring list in the Premier League this season.
The England international netted five as Spurs demolished Wigan 9-1 at White Hart Lane on Sunday and Redknapp says he can now go on and claim the Golden Boot.
"I don't see why Defoe can't be the top scorer in the Premier League this season," the Spurs boss said. "It's about time he scored 20 goals in a season. I don't know whether he's done it before, maybe with West Ham, but he should be able to do that.
Defoe just came back from a three-match suspension he received when playing against former club Portsmouth and Redknapp says if he can focus solely on football when out on the pitch and continue his solid training, there is no reason he cannot produce performances like this frequently.
"He's been so sharp in training. You could see this coming,” Redknapp added.
“The England manager will have watched him and he can't react that way," Redknapp said about the suspension.
"But he's come back strong. When he concentrates and plays his football, he can be unstoppable."
Defoe moved to 11 goals for the season and to the top of the goalscoring chart, one ahead of Liverpool’s Fernando Torres after his handful against Wigan.
