Tottenham’s Defoe may put off groin surgery

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe may not need groin surgery after all following Wednesday night’s Champions League qualifier.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe may not need groin surgery after all following Wednesday night’s Champions League qualifier.

The Spurs star looked like he may have succumbed to an injury he picked up on international duty for England at the World Cup earlier this week but he managed a full 90 minutes and a goal in the 4-0 thrashing of Young Boys and is confident he can continue without an operation.

"Now he is saying he might not need it,” Spurs boss Harry Redknapp said.

"We are in the hands of the medical people, but he said he did not feel anything tonight.

"I would rather he get it done, I don't want it dragging on all year for him, there is a fortnight [international] break coming up and he could be fit in three weeks if he has it done on Tuesday, so it may be better to get it done. We will have to wait and see."
