Thompson almost back to full fitness for Melbourne Victory
Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson is almost back to full fitness ahead of Saturday’s A-League Grand Final.
The all-time A-League leading goalscorer has been nurtured back into the Melbourne Victory side after breaking a bone in his foot in late January but is now set for a start after a couple of substitute performances in the past two matches, one in which he scored the winner in the semi-final to put the Victory in this position.
Thompson said he felt great at training yesterday and is excited about the prospect of putting in a full 90 minutes, providing of course the match against Sydney FC does not go to extra time and/or penalties.
"The session today just felt unbelievable, I'm moving great," Thompson said yesterday.
"There wasn't as much pain, there's obviously going to be stiffness ... but I feel great and I think I'm just excited to get out and hopefully start a game and especially one of the biggest games of the season.
"I'll certainly try (to play 90 minutes), it depends how my old body pulls up.
"Hopefully we'll already have it sewn up by then, that's what I'm hoping for, but hopefully I can contribute again something special like I did in the major semi-final."
