Sydney FC’s Necevski thanks fans for continued support
Sydney FC goalkeeper Ivan Necevski has thanked the supporters for sticking with the club despite going through a rough patch.
The reigning A-League champions remain stuck at the bottom of the table after 12 weeks but their last two outings have shown a huge improvement on what they had dished out earlier in the season.
Last week’s 3-0 win over Perth Glory, their first of the season, was backed up by a solid 1-1 draw with second-placed Brisbane Roar and Necevski believes it has a lot to do with the fans keeping the faith.
“The crowd that came on Saturday night, they’ve got our backs and they’ve always had our backs. They’re like our twelfth or thirteenth player on the field and it’s always good for them to turn up,” Necevski said.
“They saw how hard we worked to get the result that we did in Perth and a lot of positives came out of Saturday night’s game that we can take into Newcastle on Sunday.
“It means a lot to us that they were there and that they have turned up each week no matter what.”
Necevski said that things had turned around pretty quickly at the club in the past two weeks and admitted confidence amongst the group and individually was growing after he managed to reclaim the number one spot back from Liam Reddy.
“We came into this week’s game very positive, especially for me after keeping a clean sheet in Perth,” Necevski said. “Overall we had a really good performance. I was happy with how things turned out and happy with the point.
“The (goalkeeping) spot is pretty much there for me to take with both hands.
“Ultimately it’s going to be up to me. I want to play the rest of the season and I want to play as many games as I can.
“The spot’s there so I want to keep playing the rest of the year and hopefully go into the (Asian) Champions League as well.”
