Sunderland managed to sign Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari for next-to-nothing last week.
The Sunday Sun says the Black Cats were given special dispensation to complete the signing of the Zimbabwe international after last Monday’s 5pm cut-off point after the Wearsiders’ phone lines went down on transfer deadline day.
And by the time the deal went through, City had waived any loan fee AND agreed to pay the 31-year-old’s wages while he is on loan at Sunderland.
All Sunderland have to pay is a match fee every time Benjani turns out for them between now and the end of the season.
