Sunderland deny Jones injured due to flamboyant goal celebration

Sunderland have denied claims Kenwyne Jones suffered his latest injury due to his elaborate goal celebration.

The Black Cats' £15million-rated striker faces at least a month out with a groin-muscle pull after limping off in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Jones, 25, marked his eighth goal of the season with a trademark somersault, but club sources insist it is not the reason why he could be KO'd for up to six games.

A spokesman said: "It's something he's been carrying for a while and he aggravated it shooting at goal."

Boss Steve Bruce said: "To lose Kenwyne is a real blow."

It is time they banned all these ludicrously childish pantomime celebrations when a goal is scored. A hand shake is perfectly sufficient.

Now that may sound old hat but if you give the matter some thought most top sportsmen or indeed any performers play the percentage game and would avoid anything, which was extraneous to their jobs, which might imperil their performance.

Goal celebrations

Knees slides endanger the cartilages, joints, shins and ankles, particularly when another player/players join/s in.

Team jumping on a player, standing, potential causes of damage to the vertebrate, discs, neck and back muscles, leg muscles ankle tendons and supporting muscles.

Back flips and somersaults either of which could go wrong and break a bone, be it in the back, or neck, sprain an ankle, hand or wrist. It may look good but it is bloody stupid just to show off and the team deserves better

Player lying down being jumped on could cause crushed ribs or internal organs. I can hear Brian Clough now "What a bunch of pansies you can cut that out right now."

They should decide if they are footballers playing a man's game or circus "artistes" and I am astonished that mangers do not seem to have put a stop to this childish celebration. After all what have they actually done? Put a round ball in a huge net, which, believe it or not they are paid millions a year to do,♠ on a regular basis. perhaps it is just that it is so rare that any of them achieve anything remotely close to what they are paid for the poor misunderstood creatures just can't help themselves
